A lost art?

I don't sew. I have a sewing machine....but I don't sew. I WANT to sew....but I don't sew.
I'm in charge of Super Saturday {craft day for women} and have come up with some great ideas for varying forms of "craftiness" for the ladies to do. I know that there are some that are not into paper crafting, and therefore would enjoy doing a different form of homemade gift. I thought perhaps something that was sewn would be different and cater to those who prefer that form of creativity. I thought perhaps a "sew easy" project like placemat scripture totes would be something fun and different. The other one is slightly harder, but still an easy pattern that could be completed quickly. My mom made a mini apron for my daughter a couple of years back and she loves it. It is similar to the one that my mom made for me when I was little {the only difference is the color}. I thought it would be fun to include this item as an option, though I thought making it a mommy and me apron class would be even more fun. That way the ladies could make matching aprons for them and their daughter/granddaughter if they wanted to.
So, my excitement at these fun ideas was bubbling over. Now...trying to find someone who can sew and would be willing to be in charge of demonstrating how to create the project. Ummm.....{imagine crickets chirping}.
Yes, that's right. I'm finding that a lot of women are like me and have no idea how to sew. Most WANT to be able to sew. But they do not sew.
No worries....I will find someone, that is not the purpose of this post.
I just want to know....do any of you sew? Do you WANT to sew? I'm wondering if this is becoming a lost art. You know? My mother is an amazing seamstress and my grandmother is the queen seamstress of them all {I'm not kidding...she is amazing}. But, it stopped at my mothers generation in this family. I WILL learn at some point. Finding the time to squeeze it in is my struggle. I barely find time to squeeze in a daily shower, let alone sit down for several hours to complete a sewing project. BUT! One of these days I will!
I'll let you know how it goes....

I know how to sew - just don't like to. It probably is becoming a lost art because it's mostly cheaper now a days to buy clothes - sadly, but true.

It is equally rewarding and frustrating for me to sew!

I would like to know how to sew now, but I never cared to learn when I was younger. I just hate spending lots of money on things my mom made for us.. like Halloween costumes and pj's.

I like to sew. My problem is I can follow a pattern if it's a craft, but I can't follow a pattern that is clothes. That, and the whole lack of time issue.

crickets chirping made me giggle :)

i used to own a sewing machine but i didn't know how to use it, so i purposely "lost" it in a move. haha, i threw that puppy away :)

i have learned a little but it is not my favorite kinda crafty thing to do by far. i much prefer to make greeting cards, to sew cross stitch, and to make altered books when the mood strikes me.

you go girl.

and thanks for the comment on my silly book OCBD post tonight. i had sooooo much fun goofing around writing that silly thing.

g'night, kathleen

I really enjoy sewing. Unfortunately so does my 9 month old. I can't keep her away from the scissors, straight pins, etc. Finding time when she is asleep or otherwise distracted is hard. And I don't agree that clothes are cheaper bought than sewn. You can get some clothing cheaper bought, but to get high quality clothing it will cost more than sewing. Not that I have made much aside from my formals in high school and girls camp shorts.

LOVE to sew. Period. And I'm so grateful I had a mom who does it well to teach me.

I can sew crafty things, but clothes are out of the question. I've tried several times, but I'm never happy with the results. I think to sew clothes well, you need a serger so the seams look nice and tidy.

sewing is a lost art. Luckily my friend Shelley is a seamstress and she helps me when I need it. Sewing is a lot of fun and I definately think it'll come back. Good luck with your Super Saturday, we have ours in November.

I would love to learn. I used to cut out patterns for my mother. I can do a seam and kind of understand a pattern but I don't really get it, ya know? To me a mother sews and I need to learn. I was considering getting a sewing machine and just doing it.
