Dumb movies anyway!

So, do you remember this movie? It's from 1998. It came out about the same time as Disney's 'A Bug's Life'. This movie was made by Dreamworks Studio. We've owned the movie for awhile. I remember watching it back when it came out {pre kids}. So, I'm sure I bought it a few years back when it was on sale or something. We are serious movie watchers in this house. :0)

We went to my sister's house last weekend. It's a couple hour drive, so I told the kids to pick a movie to take in the car. They chose this one. Ok, great! We haven't seen this one in a while, that'll be nice to watch it {or for me, listen to it}. Can I tell you how shocked I was? This is a cartoon. When you think of cartoon, you automatically assume it's a kid movie. Sigh. They said the word d*mn 3 different times, hell and handfull of times, and tight @ss at least once. IN A CARTOON! It makes me so mad when they do that. How sad is it that we have to preview cartoons for our kids now. What should be a nice little flick ends up teaching my kids new words to add to their vocabulary. Sigh. Unfortunately, I had seen this one before, but forgot {or probably didn't notice back in pre kid days} about the language.

My question is: What's next? What else are they going to do to desensitize our kids? I feel like we have to been even more careful about stuff nowadays to make sure that our kids understand what is right and what is wrong. I know I'm going off on a little tangent here, but my two year old doesn't need to know those words. My son already does because he's in school, but it doesn't need to be in the things we bring into the house.

Am I the only mommy that gets frustrated by this crap? What do you guys think?

That's awful! I didn't know that movie had so many bad words. I think my kids saw it once when it first came out but I didn't watch it with them. That would upset me too. I like my kids to go on thinking that the bad words are "shut up" and "stupid."

So many of the cartoon movies have adult humor. The movie industry wants mom and dad to be entertained and don't care about the message it sends to the kids.

Bridget-I hear ya! My son came home one day and said that someone said the "S" word on the bus. I assumed it was THAT word, but it turned out the kid said stupid. WHEW!

Virginia-I LOVE Bug's Life. Way better than Antz. I bought Bug's Life when it first came out on VHS :0)

Honey Bunch-One of my favorite cartoon movies is Aladdin. Why? Because it was a cute cartoon movie for kids, but it had stuff that adults could like too. Not adult humor, but funny stuff that adults could "get". You know?

I completely agree. What happened to the good cartoons we grew up with. RAchelle

I am the biggest cartoon snob out there. There are so many banned cartoons in our home, even my MIL lets them watch cartoons they don't get to watch at home (that's another issue) But I hear you, I hate adult humor in kids movies. I don't know if you are a fan, but Monster House was so bothersome to me for that very thing. Anyway as you can see this is a touchy subject for me, I just wish we could trust a cartoon to not destroy our children's innocence. OK, someone push me off the soapbox or I could go on all day.

Yuck, thanks for the warning. I haven't seen this one.

Alicia-I didn't like Monster House either. There are a lot of cartoons I'm not a fan of, and Landon gets frustrated with me. But, I'm the Mama!

I didn't know there were CURSE words in that movie?!? I like the Pixar flix better than Dreamworks. <-- Stupid X's! I'll have to keep that in mind! I do know that DH and I had an argument about Disney (Pixar) and their previous "all G" ratings. Did you know Incredibles is a PG? ;)

Ashlee said...

I usually don't even check the ratings on cartoons because I think it should be NORMAL to assume that it is rated 'G'. Right? Incredibled had skeletons and portrayed death. PG was probably fitting for that movie. Don't you think?

We went to see Spongebob and I was aware how many time they called each other stupid. But I haven't watched Antz I don't think.

thanks for the heads up

Ashlee, I felt the same way about Shrek. (sorry if you liked it) There are things my 4 year old doesn't need to hear. She doesn't get to watch a lot of movies anyway. I have also witnessed my nephew watching the Disney channel and they swear on it too.-AmyJ-sorry for some reason I can't login so I am posting anonymous

Sassy-I'm mean and don't let my kid watch Spongebob. I know he's just a dumb sponge, but they don't speak very nicely to each other and there have been a couple of episodes that I was really shocked about. Maybe I'm over protective {OK so I am!}. I know my kid knows these words. I just feel like if I allow him to watch the shows with the words, it's like I'm giving him permission to speak that way. And stupid is a bad word around here! :0)

Amy-Shrek is forbidden around here to. Jaysen never understood why until he watched it for the first time. Between the sexual innuendos and the way they spoke to each other {including the word @ss, which I realize they were talking about a donkey, but still!} there was no way I was going to let my kid see ANY of them. Dang these cartoons anyway!
