Shnooky Kins...

I don't know what it is, but I use nicknames for so many people. I have for as long as I can remember.

In high school, my best friend was Queen Erin and I was Empress Ashlee. Don't ask...it was high school. :0) Oh! And my high school choir teacher was nickname Gibby. His name was Mr. Gibson.

Growing up, my family had nicknames too. My older sister was Smelly {Melanie}, my older brother was Cammy Wammy {Cameron}, and my little sister was Pistol {Crystal}. Very creative I know. I was little when they were chosen and they just stuck. I still call my older sister Smelly. She calls me Smash. :0) In high school, as I was taking Spanish class, I started calling my mom Madre instead of just mom.

Growing up my college friends got nicknames of their own. Penny{Jenn} was my best friend. We were roommies, so she totally deserved a special nickname. She called me Shlee.

Even now, though, I have nicknames for people. My friend Rachelle is just Chelle now, as is my other friend Michelle. It's just easier. My sister in law is Holly Wally Bolly. Why not? My FRIEND Holly is just Holly Bolly. My hubby is babe...obviously...

Landon's had so many nicknames I don't even know if I can remember them all...Let's see....piggy {when he was a baby...he ate a lot!}, stinky bum baby {that's just a duh!}, stud, bud, sugar booger {Jimmy Nuetron}, Stinky Pete {Toy Story 2}, baby, sweetheart....I could go on and on...

Mackenzee has always just been my princess. Maybe that's why she acts like such a diva. Hmmmm...but lately I've started calling her monkey because she climbs all over the place. She just can't sit still. It's very fitting.

My neices and nephews can't escape it either...there's Welby, Banana, Austy Posty {he won't let me call him that anymore though}, Greta Sketta, Lina Mae, Nae Nae, Gage Man, and Lyssa Lou. Not everyone has one. Not because some are more important than others, it's just happened that they end up with a nickname.

I don't know why I use nicknames so much. Though they are all used as a term of endearment or playfulness towards the nicknamed, it doesn't signify anything really special. I have friends now that I don't have nicknames for and family that don't have them either. I love them all just as much as the rest. So, if you don't have a nickname from me...don't feel bad. Honestly, some names are just easier for me to play with. As you can tell I usually go for rhyming in my nicknames. So perhaps it's just that the names I am able to rhyme with that get the special treatment. :0)

Anyway...do you guys use nicknames? Or am I just a wierdo? I mean...yes, I am a wierdo, but about this specifically is what I'm asking. :0)

You are a weirdo, and I do use funny names. Hi, my name is Judi but you can just call me Sister Honey Bunch.

My son is scooby doo, schmogan, doodle, buddy, and whatever else might pop into my head.

We had SO many weird nicknames for each other growing up. My siblings and I that is. Now we have lots for our kids too. They are too weird to share. You might not like me anymore if I do.

My parents were big on nicknames too when we were little. I was bolly, shannon was shada-labada, Tessa was tessa-le pesa, Matthew-booker(i know it makes no sense but that's what we called him), Shane is Shaner still to this day and Ryan was cryin ryan. My parents have nicknames for all my kids too. Nicknames are fun.

Hi Ashlee-
I had to come over from "Chatting at the Sky" after your comment about Ryan Seacrest. I laughed out loud about what you said about how he says a-MER-ican Idol. I hate that too. Every week I say, "I HATE how he says that". HA! Maybe we should write in and tell him to take it down a notch, or ten.

I totally do the same thing. Thad is called Snuggle Bunny, Sweetheart, SnuggleThad, Honey Bunny, etc etc. The little princess is called Sweet Pea, Princess, Squeaky, Beautiful Girl, Snugglebaby, etc etc. I LOVE nicknames. My sister Lily is also called Sister Belle. She's the pretty one :p

It is so funny because my bff HATES nicknames and I am dying to give her one. She loathes them. Oh well, I still love her.

Over time people just somehow begin calling me Mel, and then after a few times they ask me if I mind...well, when you've had a sister calling you Smelly for 20+ years, Mel is actually a complement :o)

I love this post. I totally do the same thing. Especially the rhyming thing.
I used to call Cory "Corky" until he imformed me he was not so fond of that. Madi was "Madi-bug", Alex was "Monkey", Gabby was "Peanut head", Jake is "Jaky-bo-baky". At work I have "Joanie-bilboanie", "Joyce-a-roo", "Smelly Janelly"(she's not stinky), Nice-jan(her name is Janice). The list goes on and on. My sister Wendy, I call "Winafred"(?). I love nick names. I get a lot of them from singing the Name Game.

We were not super big on nicknames and the only one I ever had was one I got in school and I wasn't really a big fan of it, long story, sometime I'll share it. Anyway, Tyler's family was really big on nicknames, it was weird when I first married into the family, because I was like, why don't you just call each other their real name, I have relaxed a little.

I've had a variety of nicknames over the years: V, Virg, Virgil...one of my best friends calls me Cletus. I have no idea why, but I respond to it just the same. :)

As for nicknames for other people, it depends on who it is, but I very rarely use them.
